Byron and Shelley Martin purchased Autohaus Auckland with Des and Michael’s blessing in 2014.
Having known Byron from his apprenticeship days at a Mercedes-Benz dealership in the early 1990s, Des and Michael felt they could hand the reins over with confidence that the business would be in good hands.

Apprenticeship days
Byron started his apprenticeship with Coutts Cars (now Mercedes-Benz Auckland) in the original building at 150 Great North Road, Grey Lynn in 1990. At the time, the Giltrap family had just acquired the Mercedes-Benz brand.
Coutts Cars moved to the new and still current premises of 2 Great South Road, Newmarket in 1996. Byron continued to work with Coutts until 2005, making his way from Apprentice Technician to Foreman, and eventually Service Advisor over his 16 years with the company.
In August of 2005, Byron was hand-picked by the Giltrap family to become the National After-sales Manager for Aston Martin, Bentley and Lamborghini at Independent Prestige. (Coincidentally, this role was situated at the old Coutts building in Grey Lynn where Byron had spent his apprenticeship).
A new era for premium brands – and an exciting opportunity.
A resurgence of the three car brands was welcomed in 2004, with Aston Martin introducing the all-new DB9; Bentley gave us the Continental GT and Lamborghini of course with the Gallardo. This was a very special opportunity for Byron and his small team of specialist technicians – to grow alongside these prestigious brands and their new offerings.
This would not be a challenge for the faint-hearted, as care would need to be given across multiple working areas, from importation/homologation to end-warranty processing and everything in between.
After 23 years in the automotive industry, Byron and his wife Shelley accepted the challenge and purchased Autohaus Auckland from owner Des Butler, officially taking the reins on April 1st, 2014.

Shelley was born into a family deeply entrenched in the automotive industry. Since marrying Byron, this passion has become a lifelong pursuit. Her brand-specific knowledge has grown since joining the team in 2014. You’ll find Shelley in the reception area assisting customers and carrying out the many duties required to run a business.
